What Airlines Look For Beyond Good Grades

Many students assume that excellent GCSE and A-Level results are enough to secure future pilot training opportunities. Strong grades are important. But they are only part of the picture.

Airlines recruit future professionals, not simply academic high achievers. Every airline wants individuals who can operate safely, communicate effectively and make sound decisions under pressure.

This is why recruitment processes often assess:

Communication

Pilots spend much of their careers communicating with colleagues, air traffic control, cabin crew and passengers. Clear, confident and unambiguous communication is critical.

Teamwork

Modern airline operations are built around teamwork.

Candidates who can demonstrate collaboration and respect for others often perform strongly during selection.

Decision Making

Pilots regularly make decisions in changing and sometimes challenging situations.

Airlines assess a candidate’s ability to evaluate information and reach sensible conclusions.

Professionalism

Reliability, maturity, responsibility and self-discipline are qualities airlines actively seek.

Resilience

Training can be demanding. Airlines want candidates who can remain calm, focused and motivated when faced with challenges.

The good news is that these skills can all be developed. Students do not need to wait until they apply for airline training to begin building them.

In fact, the earlier these qualities are developed, the stronger a student’s future application is likely to become. Flight training schools open selection events usually during the height of the main exam season. That’s deliberate and tests capacity in itself. Can you be mid exam preparation and still take some time to focus on career development. The application window is short and the selection process is compressed. The last thing you want to be doing is scrambling to produce an application, be shortlisted then trying to frantically practice and cram for the aptitude teat and interview mid A Level exams. Get started well in advance of this so you’re ready to push send when applications open and if shortlisted you’ve all the practice under your belt!
