BECOME A PILOT

A live aviation career programme for ambitious students aged 14–19

Aviation is one of the most competitive and misunderstood career pathways in the world. Many students dream of becoming pilots, but receive very little guidance about the academic standards, aptitude tests, interviews, professional behaviours and financial decisions involved in reaching the flight deck.

Become a Pilot has been created to maximise the chances of applying for an airline funded place at a UK flight training school opening the door to flight training but with no training costs.

This 10-week live online programme combines aviation education, applied Maths and Physics, airline-selection preparation and professional mentoring. It helps students understand what it takes to pursue a career in aviation while building the knowledge, confidence and skills required for future applications.

The programme is delivered live by Sam Piri, The Aviation Guy,  a commercially qualified pilot, qualified science teacher and experienced educator in the medical sciences. His work has been featured on both BBC, BBC Bitesize and the Discovery Channel.

Sessions take place on a variety of evenings and happen weekly from 6pm until 8pm UK time, allowing students to participate alongside their existing school or college commitments.

More Than an Online Aviation Course

Become a Pilot is not a prerecorded introduction to flying. It is a structured career-development programme designed to help students:

  • Understand commercial pilot training and aviation career pathways

  • Strengthen their applied Maths and Physics

  • Prepare for airline and flight-school selection

  • Develop communication, teamwork and decision-making skills

  • Build confidence and professional maturity

  • Make informed decisions before committing to expensive flight training

Professional pilot training can cost families more than £150,000. This programme gives students the opportunity to explore the career properly and begin preparing before applications, interviews and assessments become high-pressure and competitive.

What the Programme Covers

Each session focuses on either aviation knowledge or professional pilot skills.

Aviation Knowledge

Students will explore subjects including:

  • Principles of flight

  • Forces, motion and flight mechanics

  • Aviation weather and meteorology

  • Navigation and flight planning

  • Aircraft performance

  • Mass and balance

  • Fuel planning

  • Speed, distance and time

  • Units, measures and conversions

  • Vectors and directional calculations

  • Trigonometry in aviation

  • Runway markings and airport operations

  • Human performance and limitations

  • Basic aviation procedures and air law

Maths and Physics are taught through genuine aviation examples, helping students understand how classroom learning is applied in professional flying.

Pilot Skills and Career Preparation

Students will also develop an understanding of:

  • Commercial pilot training routes

  • Fully funded, sponsored and self-funded pathways

  • Choosing a suitable flight school

  • Airline aptitude and psychometric testing

  • Interview and application preparation

  • The professional pilot competencies

  • Crew Resource Management

  • Communication and teamwork

  • Leadership and followership

  • Workload management

  • Situational awareness

  • Threat and error management

  • Structured decision-making

  • Professional standards and behaviour

  • Medical requirements and career planning

Why Parents Choose Become a Pilot

Strong academic grades remain important, but airlines and flight schools assess much more than examination performance. Applicants may also be assessed on their communication, teamwork, judgement, resilience, motivation, situational awareness and ability to process information under pressure.

Become a Pilot helps students:

  • Connect school learning with a genuine career goal

  • Improve engagement with Maths, Physics and problem-solving

  • Develop stronger study and revision habits

  • Understand what aviation recruiters assess

  • Build confidence in professional communication

  • Prepare early for aptitude tests, interviews and applications

  • Explore funded and sponsored training opportunities

  • Avoid costly decisions made without sufficient research

  • Build a clearer and more realistic career plan

The programme provides structured preparation at a stage when most aspiring pilots are otherwise left to work everything out for themselves. Taking part relentlessly focuses on development points for maximising students success at being shortlisted for places in courses such as the British Airways Speedbird Academy or Jet2 Flightpath.

Who the Programme Is For

Become a Pilot is suitable for students aged 14–19 who are considering:

  • A commercial airline pilot career

  • Fully funded or airline-sponsored flight training

  • Self-funded professional pilot training

  • RAF or military aviation

  • Aerospace and aviation engineering

  • Aviation-related university courses

  • Other professional careers within the aviation industry

Students do not need any previous flight training or aviation experience. They should, however, have a genuine interest in aviation and be willing to participate, complete activities and engage with the programme.

What Students Will Gain

By the end of the programme, students should have:

  • A clearer understanding of aviation career pathways

  • Greater awareness of training costs and funding options

  • Stronger applied Maths and Physics knowledge

  • Improved aviation knowledge

  • Experience of aptitude-style questions and activities

  • Greater confidence in interviews and professional communication

  • A better understanding of airline competencies

  • Improved study, revision and decision-making skills

  • A realistic action plan for their next steps

  • A network of other students with similar ambitions

Students who complete the programme will also receive a certificate of completion that can support future applications and demonstrate their commitment to aviation career development.

Live Weekly Teaching

Sessions run weekly, live online between 6pm–8pm UK time. We run an Autumn, Winter and Spring course, each course is capped at 50 students.

The programme is open to students in the UK and internationally. Students can join online from anywhere, provided the UK session time is suitable.

Each weekly session introduces a different area of aviation knowledge, academic support or pilot preparation.

Students will also have opportunities to ask questions, participate in activities and learn alongside other aspiring pilots.

Limited to 50 Students

Places are intentionally limited to 50 students.

This allows sessions to remain interactive and gives students the opportunity to participate, ask questions and receive meaningful guidance throughout the programme.

Once the cohort is full, enrolment will close.

Start Preparing for the Flight Deck Now

Most aspiring pilots do not receive structured career guidance until they begin applying to flight schools or airlines.

By that stage, the process can already feel expensive, confusing and highly competitive.

Become a Pilot gives students the opportunity to begin preparing earlier, while they are still developing their academic knowledge, professional confidence and understanding of the industry.

If your child is serious about aviation, this programme can help them turn an ambition into a structured and informed plan.

Places are open for booking now, book your place early.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge sessions engages students in elements of physics and maths that translate into principles used by pilots in commercial aviation. These are also crucial areas examined in the Flight School Aptitude tests, this includes content such as:
