Aspiring Pilots Invited to Free Live Become a Pilot Taster Session Tonight

Young people considering a future career on the flight deck will have the opportunity to experience the BECOME A PILOT programme for themselves tonight, as The Aviation Guy hosts its first free live online Parent & Student Taster Session.

Taking place Wednesday 30 September from 7pm–8pm, the free 60-minute online session has been designed for aspiring pilots and their parents who want to find out more about pilot training, the knowledge involved and the different routes into an airline career.

Registration for tonight's event remains open until 6pm this evening.

What is the BECOME A PILOT Taster Session?

There is a huge amount of information online about becoming a pilot, but understanding what pilot training is actually like can be much more difficult.

The free taster session gives families the opportunity to experience part of the BECOME A PILOT programme before deciding whether the full course is right for them.

Rather than simply talking about how exciting it is to become a pilot, the session will introduce students to some of the knowledge, thinking and problem-solving skills involved in professional pilot training.

Students will get a taste of the Maths, Physics and aviation theory encountered by pilots and see how subjects studied at school begin to connect with the flight deck.

It's a chance to do more than simply hear about becoming a pilot.

It's an opportunity to have a go.

Parents are required to join too

Choosing a route into professional aviation can be daunting for families.

Should you go to university first? What qualifications do airlines require? What's the difference between integrated and modular flight training? How much does training cost? What are funded airline schemes? And what can a young person start doing now?

That's why the session is specifically designed for both students and parents.

Alongside the interactive taster lesson, we'll discuss some of the realities of beginning a pilot career and help families understand the journey from school or college towards professional flight training and eventually the airline flight deck.

Live Q&A: bring your questions

The evening will finish with a live question-and-answer session.

Parents and students can ask questions about pilot training, qualifications, airline careers, training routes and the BECOME A PILOT programme itself.

There is no requirement to enrol on the full programme afterwards.

The aim is simple: spend an hour with us, experience how we teach and leave with a much clearer understanding of what becoming a pilot actually involves.

What happens on the full BECOME A PILOT programme?

The taster provides just a snapshot of the much wider programme.

Across the full BECOME A PILOT course, students aged 14–19 explore the academic, technical and professional knowledge behind a career on the flight deck.

That means going beyond careers advice.

Students encounter subjects including Principles of Flight, Meteorology, Navigation, Aircraft Performance, Human Performance, Mass & Balance, Fuel Planning, Air Law, aircraft systems and airline operations.

They also begin developing an understanding of the competencies airlines look for during selection, including communication, teamwork, decision-making, problem solving and workload management.

Recent students, for example, spent an entire two-hour session exploring air density, atmospheric pressure, humidity, cloud formation, wind, fronts, the International Standard Atmosphere and altimetry, before completing 50 questions requiring them to apply the theory and mathematics they had learned.

The objective is to give young people a genuine head start before they ever arrive at flight school.
