From GCSE Student to Commercial Pilot: Understanding the Journey Ahead

One of the questions I am asked most often is: "What does the journey actually look like?"

Although every pilot's route is slightly different, the pathway typically follows the same broad stages.

Step 1 | Build Strong Academic Foundations

GCSEs and A-Levels remain important, particularly Maths, English and Science. These subjects develop the knowledge and skills required throughout pilot training.

Step 2 | Explore the Industry

Understanding the different training pathways, airline recruitment processes and funded opportunities helps students make informed decisions before investing in flight training.

Step 3 | Flight Training

Students complete commercial pilot training, including theoretical knowledge, instrument flying and multi-crew training before becoming eligible to apply to airlines.

Step 4 | Airline Recruitment

Applicants complete aptitude tests, competency interviews, assessment centres and simulator assessments before receiving a job offer.

Step 5 | Type Rating

Successful candidates complete aircraft-specific training before joining an airline as a First Officer.

The journey is exciting, but it is also highly competitive. Students who begin preparing early often arrive at each stage with greater confidence and a clearer understanding of what lies ahead.
